Dear friends,
Our mid-season newsletter comes with the cold, we have been experiencing colder
than usual weather in the Valley, making the early wake up calls hard! However with
the bush thinning out and water becoming less abundant the hunting has been very
good with more plains game shot. We have found the buffalo joining into bigger
groups, and the dugga boys have started to leave the breeding herds.

 

Since our last newsletter we have had several great safaris with super clients.
However 3 that stand out for no other reason then been unusual - two father and son
hunts and what we called the Dugga Boy hunt!
Father son hunts, are for us, a very special hunt. As any parent would understand how
special it is to spend quality time in the bush with their sons and or daughters. We at
CMS go out of our way to encourage these hunts. This year we were lucky enough to
have two father and son hunts. David and James Adams and Jerry and Hunter
Beardmore. We could not have asked for nicer people to share a special hunt with.
Dave and James hunted with Alan and shot two elephant bulls, lion, leopard and
buffalo plus bits and pieces. James, like Hunter is an excellent double shot and
acquitted himself exceptionally well with his Hyme 450-400.

Jerry and Hunter hunted with the “silent assassin” Rich and had a great hunt. We had
been warned by Kev Robertson who had been at Monty Calageros shooting school
when Hunter was there that he has an excellent shot with his double Hyme 450-400.
Not only did Hunter stop a charging dugga boy and get a 45lbs ele but he shot an
amazing 45 inch dugga boy.

In conclusion to both the safaris, I have to say what a pleasure it was having two young hunters, that loved the hunt the bush and who were a pleasure to have in camp - James and Hunter are a credit to their parents for sure!

The other unusual hunt that we had was 3 years in the making. It was called the “Dugga boys” hunt and consisted of several of our return clients that shared the same interest in fine guns, whisky, cigars and hunting - with the emphasis been on hunting rather than trophy collecting.
The idea was what each hunter would hunt 2/1 hunts changing not only his hunting partner every day but also the PH! This was great fun as we all hunted with different clients and PHs and the clients got to see several different hunting styles during the hunt. As each of the hunters have shot numerous trophies in the past, they tried to shoot the oldest ugliest buffalo and several tuskless. We were all successful in doing that and congrats to Casey who won the prize for the oldest most terrible buff!! To add the cherry to the cake - we also had the pleasure of Rich Harland joining the hunt which was such a privilege and a pleasure for us all!

Obviously these are not the only hunts that we have done since the last newsletter and we have been fortunate to have many super clients who have collected other great trophies as seen below.
On another note we have also been lucky with a number of close calls including Blake who got scraped by a leopard - luckily the leopard did not find Blake to tasty and Blake has fully recovered!

The success of the above hunts are with thanks to DAPU the Dande Anti Poaching Unit that makes it possible for us to continue to enjoy the privilege of hunting dangerous game in the Dande. Since our first hunt report Siraaj and his team have removed over 500 snares and caught a further 4 poachers. One of the poachers had poisoned a beautiful male leopard and he has been successfully convicted to a year in prison as has another poacher we caught with 20 litres of synide!
